- Toe hook – using the upper part of your shoe to pull on a hold
- Heel hook – hooking your heel onto a hold for tension or pulling
- Smearing – using shoe rubber directly on the wall or foot hold for friction
- Edging – using the edge of your climbing shoe on small footholds
- Bicycle – putting pressure a hold with one foot pulling up and the other foot pushing down
- Mantle – pushing down with your hands and stepping up like onto a ledge
- Compression – squeezing between two opposing holds
- Foot swap – switching one foot with the other on the same foothold

Walls
- Vertical – vertical wall with no incline
- Overhang – wall tilting towards you, requiring more strength and tension
- Slab – wall leaning away from you, requiring more balance and technique
- Cracks – walls with gaps for jamming hands, feet, or even the entire body

Holds
- Jugs – large, deep holds that are easy to grab
- Slopers – smooth rounded holds without an edge to indicate where to hold
- Pinches – holds you grip by squeezing between your fingers and thumb
- Pockets – holds with one or more holes for the fingers
- Volumes – large, angular wall features used to modify routes

Grabbing
- Open hand – gripping the hold with straight, unbent fingers
- Half-crimp – placing the fingertips on a hold and curling them at the second joint, with the thumb resting naturally beside the index finger
- Full-crimp – fingers fully bent with the thumb locking over
- Pinching – gripping a hold by squeezing with thumb and fingers
